MossTak

Role

I was deeply involved in the design and development of the product, overseeing both the conceptual design of the moss tiles and the creation of a functional prototype. This included utilizing CAD tools to model and mock up the product, and using 3D printing to create the physical prototype. Additionally, I played a pivotal role in the creation of our website and digital presence, where I designed the user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) flows on Figma, and set up the website using a website builder.

Beyond design and development, I contributed to market research, identifying key trends in sustainability and construction to ensure that MossTak was positioned effectively in the market. I also worked on creating our pitch materials, including the presentation deck and investor pitch, using tools like Canva to ensure our messaging was clear, visually appealing, and impactful.

Project Highlights

Product Design & Development: Designed and prototyped sustainable moss tiles using CAD tools and 3D printing, ensuring functionality and aesthetic appeal.

UX/UI Design: Created intuitive website flows using Figma and set up the final website to showcase the product concept.

Prototyping: Developed a physical prototype of the roofing system, demonstrating the product’s feasibility and confirming our business concept.

Business Concept Development: Contributed to the creation of a comprehensive business plan and market research to support product positioning.

Pitching to Investors: Worked collaboratively to create a compelling pitch, presenting MossTak to industry experts and investors at the end of the semester.

Impact & Learnings

MossTak was a significant learning experience in both design and business strategy. The hands-on process of designing and creating a physical prototype allowed me to apply my technical skills in a real-world context, while the business plan and investor pitch taught me how to take a product from concept to execution. The fast-paced, high-pressure environment pushed me to develop quick decision-making skills and adaptability — especially when working with a diverse team of individuals. This project reinforced my passion for entrepreneurship, sustainability, and product development, and further honed my ability to navigate both technical challenges and team dynamics.

MossTak is an innovative, sustainable roofing solution designed to reduce a home’s carbon footprint while enhancing its aesthetic appeal. By using moss tiles that grow from rainfall, the roofing system naturally keeps the home cooler and purifies the air by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. The concept offers homeowners a cost-effective, eco-friendly alternative to traditional roofing materials, merging sustainability with modern design.

In the New Venture Creation course, our team was tasked with developing a business concept, creating a physical prototype, and pitching it to a panel of industry experts and investors. The project required us to address everything from product design and development to business strategy, marketing, and scaling. We were not only responsible for developing a tangible product but also for crafting an investor-ready business plan and presentation materials.
