Tailgating Detection Device

Role

Lead Designer & Developer

Project Highlights

Solo project for Physical Computing and Object Design course

Designed, programmed, and fabricated the complete device independently

Integrated Arduino Uno, HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor, piezo buzzer, and NeoPixel board

Performed soldering, wiring, and enclosure fabrication with laser cutting

Resulted in a fully functional prototype, presented to faculty and peers

I was motivated by my own experiences to develop a functional prototype to address the safety issue of tailgating during commutes. The tailgating device uses a combination of sensors and metrics to warn and hopefully ward off tailgater.

This prototype uses an ultrasonic sensor (HC-SR04) to measure the distance of approaching vehicles and responds with varying auditory (piezo buzzer) and visual (NeoPixel display) warnings based on proximity. The messages get more agrressive the closer a tailgater is. All systems were programmed with an Arduino Uno and enclosed in a custom laser-cut housing.
